Subtitle specifications / style guides

We’re often asked what subtitle specifications (character limits, minimum / maximum durations etc) should be used, and the short answer is that it depends on your application. If your subtitle file is going to be broadcast on terrestrial television, then it’ll have much more stringent requirements than a video on YouTube, for instance.
