Publish captions to the YouTube API (beta)
Add captions to YouTube live streams
This feature is being rolled out. Contact your account manager for more information.
Timbra allows you to add live captions to YouTube using the YouTube “POST API”.
Setup in YouTube
Open your live stream in YouTube:

In the Stream settings tab, make sure you:
- Select Normal latency (YouTube only allows captions in this mode)
- Select Post captions to URL and select your source language
Now copy the Captions ingestion URL to your clipboard - you’re going to add that to CaptionHub.
Setup in CaptionHub
- Create a new project with the External APIs output type
- Click the Flow tab
- Click “Add new target” and select YouTube
- Provide a name and paste in the YouTube captions ingestion URL. You can optionally add a link to the YouTube channel.
Limitations
- There’s no Natural Captions — caption formatting is courtesy of YouTube
- Currently only publishing the source language is supported
- Synchronisation between audio and the captions is limited. Typically you’ll see a 1-4 second delay.
- YouTube only allows a single input language
Dealing with publishing issues
If you’re seeing an issue indicating that Timbra isn’t able to publish captions to YouTube, please check the URL you’ve configured.
